Sanderson was awarded their first Royal warrant in 1924 by King George as ‘Purveyor of Wallpapers and Paints’. This is said to be the first Warrant granted for the supply of these products and the company continues to provide fabrics, paint and wall coverings under Royal warrant to HM The Queen and the British Royal Palaces.

In 1860 Arthur Sanderson established himself in Islington, London, as an importer of French wallpapers. His chosen merchandise featured expensive, luxurious wallpapers, such as the panoramic and imitation-leather papers manufactured by Paul Balin of Paris, for whom Sanderson was the sole agent in England. Later in 1868/9 Arthur Sanderson began having his own designs commission-printed by the best block printers in England and in 1879 opened his own wallpaper factory in Chiswick, London.

The founder passed away in 1882 and his three sons continued the business under the name ‘Arthur Sanderson & Sons’ and soon after, following continued growth and success, the Sanderson family home in Chiswick is donated to the town for use as a free library.

In 1929 Sanderson built a large new factory further west of London at Perivale, covering over 10 acres and employed at its peak nearly 1,700 workers.

Just after the outbreak of WWII in 1940, the famous Morris & Co. went into voluntary liquidation and Sanderson bought the wallpaper business together with the rights to use the company name, acquiring blocks, logbooks and existing stock, including the entire contents of Morris & Co.’s Hanover Square London showroom. You can still purchase iconic Morris & Co designs at Sanderson today.

After several stormy years in the last decade, the company celebrates its 150th anniversary  this year and continues to keep alive some of the finest visual designs in the world whilst its contemporary design innovations ensures  its continued success.
